Upward Bound

The upward Bound Program is designed to prepare high school students with college potential to pursue a college degree. High School students accepted into the program during the academic year come to the MCC campus each Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for approximately 30 weeks. The Upward Bound Computer Lab is also open each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evening from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. During the 30 weeks, students receive intensive instruction in academic skills such as Reading, English, Writing, Mathematics, science, Spanish and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school. Each student is required to maintain regular attendance in the program. Upward Bound provides a summer non-residential program during the months of June and July. Students come to the MCC campus Monday thru Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The program is designed to simulate a college-going experience. Other services available through Upward Bound are Advisement,Counseling,Tutoring, and Cultural activities.
Academic Instruction
Certified teachers from local high schools provide instruction in Reading, English, Writing, Study Skills, Mathematics, Science and Spanish. An Individualized Educational Development Work Plan is developed for each student using the Essental Elements as guidelines. Textbooks and other materials are provided by Upward Bound.
Advisement
The Upward Bound Staff assists students with academic advice, high school course advisement, and provides post secondary education information. The staff will utilize the IDEAS for career guidance. Financial aid information concerning grants, scholarships, and loans are made available to the students and parents.
Counseling
Upward Bound provides a comprehensive counseling program, which is designed to improve students' interpersonal skills. To facilitate this goal, Upward Bound employs a full-time professional counselor and several peer counselors who provide personal and small group counseling.
Tutoring
The tutorial program for Upward Bound concentrates on academic subjects such as English/Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Spanish. Students attending MCC and Upward Bound graduates are employed as tutors for individualized assistance.
Cultural Enrichment
To meet cultural, social, and recreational needs, Upward Bound plans various activities designed to provide diverse experiences. Activities include Upward Bound Academic Bowl Competition, drama productions, art exhibits, sports activities, Parents Day, TRIO Day, awards banquet, plays and movies. Trips include visits to major colleges and universities.
