EMS Courses
Emergency Care Attendant
This course is designed to prepare the student to provide an ill or injured person with initial onsite assessment and emergency care at the first responder level. This course is geared for fire departments and first responder groups. Additional topics include CPR and protection from blood born pathogens. Upon completion students are eligible to apply for certification, by examination from the Texas Department of Health as an Emergency Care Attendant.
Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
This course is designed to prepare the student with theory and skills needed by the Basic Emergency Medical Technician. Topics include: patient assessment, general ambulance operations, legal aspects of EMS, basic rescue techniques, bleeding and shock, cardiac and respiratory emergencies, medical emergencies, burns, basic pharmacology, bandaging and splinting, traction splinting, ob, pediatric emergencies and use of AED. Additional courses provided are Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers and Basic Trauma Life Support-Basic. The student will spend time on an ambulance and in the hospital. Student must hold a current Health Care Provider CPR card.
*Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate
This course is designed to prepare the student with theory and skills needed by the Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate. This course builds on the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. Topics include the advance roles and responsibilities within the EMS system; pathophysiology, pharmacology, advanced patient assessment, management of medical emergency patients; basic concepts of physical and cognitive development, patient communication, understanding the medical/legal and ethical issues relating to EMS Practice, the ability to maintain an airway by basic and advanced measures to include intubation, implement the treatment for the trauma patient to include IVs. The student will spend time on an ambulance and in the hospital. Additional courses provided are Basic Trauma Life Support-Advance. The student must hold a current Health Care Provider CPR card and EMT-Basic certification.
*Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
This course is designed to prepare the student with theory and skills needed by the Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. This course builds on the Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate. Topics include a comprehensive course covering all aspects of the utilization medication, pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for the medical emergency patient to include neurology, endocrine, respiratory, cardiac, patients with special needs, neonatal, pediatric, geriatric, OB, diverse patients, and chronically ill patients. Students will be able to safely manage rescue situation, hazardous materials and crime scenes. Students will spend time in the hospital and on an MICU ambulance. Additional courses provided include Basic Vertical Rescue, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Advanced Life Support, Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers. Students must have completed the Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate course and hold a Health Care Provider CPR card.
Critical Care Paramedic
This course is designed prepare the experienced paramedic to work with and transport critical care patients. Training includes knowledge of potential problems and the management of the critical care patient during transport. Topics include: advanced cardiac, respiratory, renal, and neurology anatomy, physiology and monitoring techniques, (to include balloon pumps, portable vents and pumps, ventricular devices, ICP monitors, obtaining blood gases, halos, and central lines) and ICU pharmacology. Students will spend time in the ICUs, Respiratory department , dialysis units. A field trip to Seaton Hospital in Austin will be taken to observe patients waiting for or with recent heart transplants.
Refresher courses are available for all levels. These courses meet the requirements
of Texas Department of Health and National Registry for recertification.
