English
Welcome to the world of written English, one of the most important language forms in existence. English courses include all levels and types of writing, the study of American, British, and world literatures, as well as courses in any of the following (and other) specially focused topics: authors (Shakespeare, Twain, O’Connor), genres (novels, short stories, drama, poetry), themes (sci-fi, children's lit, war/peace), periods (medieval, Romantic, American Western, modern), cultures (Native American, Spanish American, African American).
Mission
English writing and literature courses are all designed to improve students' facility with the written language. Developmental writing prepares students for college courses; composition, technical, and creative writing courses promote various types of writing proficiency; and literature courses fulfill associate's and bachelor's degree requirements while broadening students' understanding of literary discourse. English faculty members also sponsor Sigma Kappa Delta, English Honor Society, and The Stone Circle, a publication showcasing student writing and artwork (see http://www.mclennan.edu/students/publications/stone_circle/).
