Dr. Dennis F. Michaelis became the second president of McLennan Community College on September 1, 1988. Michaelis was born in Hill City, Kansas. He graduated from a small high school in northwest Kansas. He received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1965, a master of arts degree in English from Fort Hays State University in Kansas in 1970, and earned his doctorate in higher education administration from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, in 1979.

Michaelis was president of Paris Junior College 1983 to 1988. Previously, he was president of Lake Region Community College in Devils Lake, North Dakota, and was dean of student services/admissions at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas. His teaching experience started in 1965 with two years in junior high, four years in high school, and three years at the community college level before going into an administrative position.

Michaelis is a member of the American Association of Community College Trustees, Rotary Club of Waco, where he served as president during the 1995-96 year, Chamber of Commerce of Waco, Texas Community College Teachers Association, Texas Association of Community Colleges, McLennan Community College Foundation Board of Directors, where he serves as secretary, Waco Business League, and Providence Healthcare Network Board of Directors.
