Admission Criteria

Admission criteria are subject to change. It is the student's responsibility to remain current with admission requirements. Applications are ranked by using the point system below. For applicants with 15 hours or more from the ADN curriculum, GPA will be determined in those specific courses only, not counting the elective.

Although VNSG 1420 is no longer offered (it has been replaced with biology courses), applicants who have taken VNSG 1420 as a pre-requisite course will have that course grandfathered in as their first science course.

One of the following must be completed as a prerequisite:

BIOL 1406 or BIOL 1407 or BIOL 1408 or BIOL 2404 or CHEM 1405 or CHEM 1407 or CHEM 1411.

The other prerequisite courses (BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402 and PSYC 2301) must be successfully completed prior to beginning RNSG 1523.

Effective for Fall 2009 entry:

  • Anatomy and Physiology I and II must not be completed more than five years at the time the student is accepted into the nursing program.
  • POFM 1202 is being replaced by HPRS 1206 – Medical Terminology. Applicants who apply for Spring 2010 entry should take Medical Terminology. POFM 1202 will be accepted if it has already been completed prior to Fall 2009.
  • There will be two concurrent day programs.

Point system

  1. Grade Point Average x 10. GPA is calculated using support courses in the ADN curriculum, excluding the humanities elective.
  2. Grade of "A" in required sciences on first attempt:
    • 1 pointBIOL 1406, 1407, 1408, 2404, CHEM 1405, or CHEM 1411
    • 1 pointBIOL 2401
    • 1 pointBIOL 2402
  3. Residence (Furnishing false information to the college with intent to deceive may result in admission denial or program dismissal.)
    • 1 pointMcLennan County
  4. 1 pointHealth Career Certification

Copies of health career certifications must be included with applications or in the ADN office before the deadline date. Applicants must submit a letter from their employers validating at least 6 months of work experience in the past year.

Re-admission policy

Due to the inter-relationship of nursing courses taught each semester, if a withdrawal from one nursing course is necessary, the student must withdraw from all nursing courses.

To be eligible for re-admission, a student must meet the minimum requirements for entry into the program, including Nursing Admission Assessment Test with scores on math and reading equal to or higher than the required scores and within the required time frame; a GPA of 2.8 in all required nursing support courses; and all pre-requisite courses completed (please see degree plan).

As a component of re-admission, the student must provide a re-admission application and an updated transcript to the Associate Degree Nursing Advisor. In particular, it is important for the student to identify factors that kept them from being successful in the program, factors that have changed and what the individual's plan is to be successful if re-admitted. This information must be submitted with the re-admission application. Any questions about the re-admission process should be clarified with the Associate Degree Nursing Advisor. The Admission Committee will review the re-admission form each semester and will prioritize the request.

A student will be accepted on a space-available basis and will be notified in writing by the admissions committee. Upon re-admission, the student must meet with the Associate Degree Nursing Advisor to update transcripts, physical forms and CPR requirements. The student is required to contact the Retention Specialist before the first day of class.

A student who has failed two nursing courses is not eligible for re-admission. The student must wait five years from the date of initial entry into the nursing program and apply as a new student. The student will compete as a new applicant at that time. Science courses must be no older than five years at the time a student is accepted into the nursing program.

International Student Admission Requirements

International students must meet the general admission requirements of McLennan Community College. International admission requirements are applied to all students who have international secondary or post-secondary educational credentials, regardless of country of citizenship, immigrant status, or visa status.

Each high school and college attended must be listed on the application for admission. Official transcripts for each high school and college attended must be attached to the application. Official records must be provided in the original language and, when that is not English, accompanied by a certified translation into English. Unofficial records that do not bear the original signature of the institution's representative cannot be used. Records must be signed by the registrar, dean, or headmaster of the institution issuing the documents. Photocopies will be accepted if they bear the institution's original seal and the original signature of the school official certifying the documents. Transcripts and other records attested as certified by a notary public or solicitor (non-institutional official) will not be accepted as official.

English proficiency is met through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum Internet-based TOEFL score of 94 with a minimum Reading score of 22 and a minimum Listening score of 22 or a paper/pencil test score of 587 with a minimum of 56 in Reading and a minimum of 22 in Listening. TOEFL results are only valid up to two years from the testing date, meaning scores will not be considered if they are more than two years old. TOEFL score reports must be sent directly to the Associate Degree Nursing Program Director from the testing center. Information about the TOEFL may be obtained from the website www.ets.org/toefl or by calling 1-800-468-6335.

Applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement if they have earned a U.S. high school diploma, having attended all four years of high school in the U.S.

Information about the TOEFL may be obtained from the Educational Testing Service.
