Retention Program
The purpose of the Nursing Student Retention Program is to increase the number of students who successfully complete the ADN Program at MCC and become registered nurses. To achieve this outcome, the ADN Program has a Retention Specialist who provides several services for nursing students at MCC:
Preparation for Success Workshops
All nursing students are invited to attend hour-long workshops presented throughout the semester that cover topics such as time management, study skills and test taking strategies. The workshops present information that facilitates learning and student performance.
One-on-One Educational Guidance
Students meeting the following criteria will be referred by faculty members for individual test analysis and one-on-one educational guidance:
- students who have failed a previous nursing course(s) and have been re-admitted to the nursing program
- students who fail an exam in any nursing course
A student must call the Retention Specialist to schedule an appointment within 5 business days of being notified that he/she meets one or more of these criteria. If the student does not comply with the above, the student will not be allowed to take the next scheduled exam and will be required to take a make-up exam later. Continued meetings between the student and the Retention Specialist will be determined by student progression toward academic success.
Counseling and Referral Services
Any student may self-refer to the Retention Specialist for:
- one-on-one guidance to improve course grades
- assistance with financial aid, child care, transportation, textbook loan, or referral for personal counseling issues
