Paramedicine
MCC´s eight health careers programs combine extensive classroom instruction with clinical rotations in local hospitals and health agencies, where students experience direct patient care. Graduates are in demand and generally receive excellent starting salaries.
All health careers programs have a limited enrollment and special entrance requirements must be met. Admission to the programs is competitive, so meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission to the program.
Applications for each program, available in the MCC Student Services Building, list specific admission requirements and deadlines.
For more information, call 299-8MCC.
Paramedics, commonly called Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedics (EMTs), work with doctors in the immediate treatment of medical and trauma emergencies in the field. They perform such skills as intubation, defibrillation, IV therapy, cardiac monitoring and emergency drug administration.
Students study cardiac, obstetric, pediatric and medical emergencies; learn IV and airway management, pharmacology, basic trauma life support, advanced cardiac life support, triage and rescue; and perform hospital clinical rotations and do field training in ambulance work.
Graduates of this one-year program receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to take the state examination for certification. For more information, call 254-299-8591 or email pwilliams@mclennan.edu.
Admission Requirements
All health sciences programs have competitive admission requirements for limited enrollments. These include Associate Degree Nursing, Health Information Technology (Medical Records), Medical Laboratory Technician, Paramedicine, Physical Therapist Assistant, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Care Technology and Vocational Nursing. Any individual who wishes to enroll in any of these programs should:
- Meet admission requirements of the college.
- Submit a program application to the Office of Student Admissions by the deadline date for each admissions review.
- Submit to Office of Student Admissions required data which includes: all previous high school or college transcripts; ACT or SAT scores; when applicable, reading and math tests may also be required.
- Attend program information sessions or arrange a conference with the program director for program information.
- Meet established criteria for admission and other admission requirements of individual program.
- Have a physician complete the health form for admission to one of the health sciences programs after notification of conditional acceptance has been received.
- Return acceptance form indicating that applicant will register for enrollment.
- Submit documentation of CPR certification, when required, before beginning clinical phase of the program within the first year.
Applications will not be processed until all required information is submitted, therefore incomplete applications are not forwarded for program review. Admission will be finalized only after all admission requirements listed above have been met. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee admission to the program.
Students must maintain a minimum grade of C in prescribed courses, as well as an overall 2.0 grade point average in order to continue in a health sciences program or to be eligible to apply for re-entry into a program following interruption of study regardless of the reason for departure. Failure in any health sciences course indicates the possibility of failure in licensing examinations. Therefore, no more than one health sciences course may be repeated during the program, and that course may be repeated only once. To receive credit for a health sciences course, the student must be able to relate classroom theory to the clinical experience and vice versa. Each program has established student policies pertaining to its program. This is necessary in order to meet the criteria of the licensing board of the individual programs. Each student is given a copy of these policies when beginning the program.
