Welcome to McLennan Community College's Vocational Nursing Program. The faculty wants each student to have a positive learning experience and to be successful. We believe in safe practice, honesty and integrity. Workforce skills such as punctuality will be stressed. Competence in nursing is developed through diligence and participation in the classroom, learning lab and all clinical rotations. Students are considered active partners in the learning process.

Mission

McLennan Community College's Vocational Nursing Program is committed to preparing graduates that can safely and effectively fill a beginning technical level role as a member of the nursing team. Program graduates develop the beginning skills, knowledge, understanding and attitudes essential for giving safe, competent and effective care.

Application Process

  • Fall Admission - May 15th (applications accepted January 1 - May 15th)
  • Spring Admission - November 1st (applications accepted July 1 - November 1st)

MCC Admission Application

(Unless exempt, students who have not previously tested must take an approved alternative test)
  • Attend Vocational Nursing General Information Session.
  • For information sessions call (254) 299-8347 to reserve a space or to make an individual appointment.

HESI Admission/Assessment Test

  • Minimum comprehensive score of 70.
  • Reading comprehension score of 70.
  • Minimum math skills score of 70.
  • HESI scores older than three years will not be accepted.
  • Only MCC HESI scores will be accepted.

Vocational Nursing Admission Application (Transcripts from any colleges or universities must be submitted with application). A $20 application fee is required. Please attach a copy of the receipt to the Vocational Nursing Program application.

B._____ Current Health Careers Certification

Certification in a health occupation recognized by program's admission committee.......................................2 points
(Copy of certification must be submitted with application by deadline date.) Points will not be added after deadline dates. Also must submit letter from employer validating at least 6 month work experience within the past year. No points for CNA or CMA.

C._____ Science Completion Points

Grade of at least B in curriculum science requirement. If course substitution is requested, both BIOL 2401 & BIOL 2402 must have been completed w/grade of at least C in each.............3 points

D._____ Proof of Residence

“Proof of residence” required (utility bill, drivers license) For Mclennan County .............1 point Residence-furnishing false information to the college with the intent to deceive may result in admission denial or program dismissal.

International Student Admission Requirements for Nursing Programs (TOEFL)

International students must meet the general admission requirements of McLennan Community College. International admission requirements are applied to all students who have international secondary or post-secondary educational credentials, regardless of country of citizenship, immigrant status, or visa status.

Each high school and college attended must be listed on the application for admission. Official transcripts for each high school and college attended must be attached to the application. Official records must be provided in the original language and, when that is not English, accompanied by a certified translation into English. Unofficial records that do not bear the original signature of the institution's representative cannot be used. Records must be signed by the registrar, dean, or headmaster of the institution issuing the documents. Photocopies will be accepted if they bear the institution's original seal and the original signature of the school official certifying the documents. Transcripts and other records attested as certified by a notary public or solicitor (non-institutional official) will not be accepted as official.

English proficiency is met with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum Internet-based TOEFL score of 100, a computer-based test score of 250, OR a paper/pencil test score of 600 is required for admission. TOEFL results are valid up to two years from the testing date. Scores will not be considered if they are more than two years old. Test score reports must be sent directly to the nursing program director from the testing center.

Applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement if they have earned a U.S. high school diploma, having attended all four years of high school in the U.S.

Immunizations and CPR

When making application to the Vocational Nursing Program, students will be required to show proof or immunization against Hepatitis B (three immunizations), varicella, mumps, measles, rubella, diphtheria/tetanus, and a tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray. Applicants need to show proof of certification in infant, child and adult CPR

Consists of three academic courses and thirteen nursing courses.

Students must pass both the theory and clinical parts of any vocational nursing course to progress in the program. A grade of C or better must be earned in all courses required for a certificate of completion in Vocational Nursing. A program student must be enrolled in both a clinical course and a theory course in every semester.

Drug Screen and Criminal Background Check

When accepted into the program, students must submit negative screen and criminal background check results.

Licensure

The Board of Nurse Examiners may deny licensure to individuals who answer "Yes" to the following questions:

  1. Have you been convicted, adjudged guilty by a court, plead guilty, no contest or nolo contendere to any crime in any state territory or country, whether or not a sentence was imposed, includeing any pending criminal charges or unresolved arrest (excluding minor traffic violations)? This includes expunged offenses and deferred adjudications with or without prejudice of guilt. Please note tha DUI's, DWI's, PI's must be reported and are not considered minor traffic violations. (One time minor in possession [MIP] or minor in consumption [MIC] do not need to be disclosed, therefore you may answer "No". If you have two or more MIP's or MIC's, you may answer "Yes".)
  2. Do you have any criminal charges pending, including unresolved arrests?
  3. Has any licensing authority refused to issue you a license or ever revoked, annulled, cancelled, accepted surrender of, suspended, placed on probation, refused to renew a professional license or certificate held by you now or previously, or ever fined, censured, reprimanded or otherwise disciplined you?
  4. Within the past five (5) years have you been addicted to and/or treated for the use of alcohol or any other drug?
  5. Within the past five (5) years have you been diagnosed with, treated, or hospitalized for schizophrenia and/or psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder or borderline personality disorder?

Applicants who answer "Yes" to any of these questions should contact the Board of Nurse Examiners at 1-512-305-6818 to clarify their status and complete a declaratory order.
