FINANCIAL AID SPECIALIST

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

To maintain and recommend procedures for equitable distribution of awards; assist veterans and eligible dependents in receiving VA Educational Benefits and ensure required documentation is received and processed in a timely manner. To counsel VA and other students seeking financial aid and recommend available alternatives; to process student financial aid applications; and to develop and award student financial aid packages in accordance with prescribed policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines, and to provide highly responsible staff support to the Associate Director of Financial Aid.

NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent education and work experience.
Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in financial aid or related area.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Knowledge of: (1) Students' rights, responsibilities, and obligations regarding financial aid; (2) Applicable Federal, State, and College rules, and regulations regarding student financial aid programs and veterans programs; (3) Microcomputers and various software programs; (4) Modern office practices and procedures; (5) Record keeping and reporting procedures; (6) Principles of effective public relations; (7) Counseling skills. Ability to: (8) Understand and interpret technical and governmental documents; (9) Deal effectively with "angry" students and resolve "sensitive issues"; (10) Interpret and apply Federal, State, and College policies, procedures, laws, and regulations as applied to financial aid and veterans programs; (11) Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; (12) Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Desk work; occasional field trips e.g. for college or program activities. Insignificant effort other than normal movement. Minimal Hazard/Exposure: Standard office setting. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
