Celebrating MCC Faculty and Staff Achievement

DR. RUTH PITTS

Dr. Ruth Pitts, transfer music instructor, has been selected as a Piper Professor of 2008 by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. She is one of only 15 professors in Texas to receive the award.

Ruth has been at MCC since 1977 and has been teaching for more than 35 years. She says that what she loves most about teaching is seeing the smiles on students when they hear really beautiful music and realize that they can create it themselves.

"Receiving this award is a thrill of a lifetime," Ruth says. "I do not feel deserving, but I am truly very honored and grateful."

DR. LINDA DULIN

Speech instructor Dr. Linda Dulin recently had her research published in the Spring issue of the Journal of Leadership Studies. The article is titled "Leadership Preferences of a Generation Y Cohort: A Mixed Methods Investigation."

Linda's investigation focused on the importance of leader-subordinate relationships and identifying the leadership styles preferred by Gen Y-ers. The sequential mixed-methods study used focus group interviews to generate leadership themes and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the themes. The result was five leadership themes identified by the focus groups and confirmed through CFA.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER

The MCC SBDC was recently named "SBDC of the Year" by the Dallas/Ft. Worth District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The award recognizes MCC SBDC's achievements in several areas, including exceeding SBA milestones set for SBDCs across the country and establishing economic development initiatives—specifically infusing more than $2.7 million in capital for the Waco area. Other criteria used in the award decision include meeting economic impact goals, providing special services and contributing to community development of entrepreneurs.

The North Texas Regional Office of SBDC nominated the MCC office for the award, which was presented at the 2008 Salute to Small Business luncheon on May 1 in Arlington, Texas.
