Library Services for Faculty

Library Instruction

Instructors can arrange for a librarian to teach library instruction classes, including general group tours, individual instructional sessions, or subject specific library research classes. The subject specific classes are tailored specifically to the needs of individual faculty and their courses. Classes are scheduled, if possible, at least two weeks in advance to allow for proper preparation and classroom availability. Please review the full Bibliographic Instruction Guidelines. To schedule a class, complete an Online Form or contact one of the librarians listed below.

Course Reserves

Print reserves at the MCC Library serve faculty and students by allowing easy access to items of anticipated high use. Materials in these collections are assigned shortened loan periods and more stringent overdue penalties. Items that may be placed on reserve are library-owned books, personal copies of books, book chapters, copies of articles, class notes, or syllabi. Materials placed on reserve by MCC faculty are available at the Library Information Desk. Information about individual reserves items can be located by searching in the Online Catalog. To place materials on print reserves, send an email to Louise Banks-Smith, come into the library to complete the form, or fill out the reserves submission form (pdf) on your computer, print it out and bring it to the library with the materials to be placed on reserves.

Instructors may also place items on Electronic Reserves by sending an email with an attachment to Beth Shultz. Items that may be placed on Electronic Reserves are links to internet sites, scanned copies of articles from periodicals or links to articles in our electronic databases, class notes, or syllabi, PowerPoint files, or Word documents. Electronic Reserves can (and usually should) be restricted to students enrolled in a particular course. The individual instructor is responsible for complying with copyright and fair use.

Blackboard & Library Resources

Here are some ideas on how instructors can provide library resources to their students within their Blackboard courses for internet, supplemental and hybrid courses.

Liaison Program

During fall 2004, the MCC Library is initiated a formal liaison service to promote better communication and improved service to library users. Your departmental Library Liaison will be happy to assist you in setting up online database access training for students or faculty, class orientations, or group assignment research projects.

Databases Trials

The library samples many research databases and electronic resources throughout the year to make education and informed decisionns about our selection of research resources available for general and curricular use.

All library trials are can be accessed at: http://mcclib.edublogs.org/library-database-trials/ (password required, contact library).

If you are interested in using these trial databases, please contact your library liaison or the Online Librarian for login information.

Additionally, feel free to contact your liaison if you wish to make suggestions regarding database trials and selection.

Weeding Project

The library is publishing a list of books to be weeded from the collection. We encourage and welcome any comments or concerns regarding this on-going project. Faculty are invited to look at this list and make suggestions as to whether these items should be discarded or returned to the stacks. To view the library's policy on weeding, go to the Collection Development page. Please contact Terri Hugo for information or comments. Click here to see the weeding list.
