MCC's Hispanic Student Association hosting Ciclovia Nov. 9
Posted: November 4, 2019
McLennan Community College's Hispanic Student Association (HSA) will host MCC Ciclovía ? an outdoor fitness and recreation event that opens campus streets to people and closes them to cars? from 8 a.m.-noon Nov. 9 on the MCC campus. The free event is a local version of the international ciclovía and will provide a safe place for people to improve their health, decrease traffic congestion, and build community by giving participants alternative access for physical activity and informational outreach.
According to the County Health Rankings of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, 24 percent of McLennan County residents age 20 and up do not engage in physical activity during leisure time. Additionally, the obesity prevalence in McLennan County is higher than both state and national averages, according to the Ascension Providence McLennan County Community Health Needs Assessment. MCC Ciclovía will provide a space for all ages and abilities to come out, improve their health, and take part in fun recreational activities.
"The goal of MCC Ciclovía is not only to promote healthy habits and physical wellbeing but to promote accessibility, build diverse relationships in the community, and promote environmental sustainability," said HSA student organizer Maria Briseño.
The event will include free glucose and blood pressure checks by MCC nursing students, live music and a DJ, a bike rodeo and bicycle helmet giveaway sponsored by the McLennan County Medical Association, vendor booths, and other recreational/informational activities.
