Tartan Scholars win award for work with Toys for Tots
January 30, 2009
The Tartan Scholars Honors Program at McLennan Community College has received the Commander's Award from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for its outstanding success in the 2008 Toys for Tots program.
The Tartan Scholars sponsor the toy drive every year on MCC's campus and this year provided about 10 full boxes of toys to the Marines. For their efforts, the scholars received a commemorative Commander's Award plaque from the Marines.
Students are chosen for the Tartan Scholars program based on their academic potential and willingness to use their skills for the assistance of others. The program includes a scholarship for tuition and fees for up to four semesters, a book allowance each semester, an honors course each semester and special enrichment activities and field trips. In return, these scholars give back to the community through various service projects, including coordinating the Toys for Tots drive at MCC, helping with special events at Cameron Park Zoo and working with Habitat for Humanity.
