MCC Turns 60: Students to Celebrate Heritage Day Nov. 3

McLennan Community College (MCC) invites the media to celebrate MCC Heritage Day, a special event commemorating the College’s 60th anniversary. Born from a student’s suggestion, MCC Heritage Day honors the College’s founding in November 1965 and its lasting impact on Waco and McLennan County.
WHAT: Students will enjoy birthday cupcakes, snag a 60th sticker, visit with leaders, take photos with MAC, and enter a drawing for MCC Highlander Spirit prizes.
WHO: MCC President Dr. Johnette McKown, College leaders & MCC Mascot Mac. T. Highlander
WHEN: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3 WHERE: MCC, 1400 College Drive, outside the Learning Technology Center (LTC)
WHY: Heritage Day is one of several events throughout the 2025-26 academic year celebrating MCC’s 60th anniversary. MCC opened its doors in 1965 as the first junior college in Texas to include the word “community” in its name—a commitment to serving and supporting local students that continues today. From 800 students in its first semester to more than 8,000 students annually across 140 academic and workforce programs, MCC has been a catalyst for education, opportunity, and regional growth.
“We are so proud of the achievements by students and staff over the last 60 years and remain dedicated to leading students to careers through affordable, high-quality education and workforce training,” said MCC President Dr. Johnette McKown.
The College kicked off its 60th anniversary celebrations this fall with its staff convocation and will continue the festivities on Saturday, Nov. 8, with a guided Waco Walks tour of MCC’s historic campus, including a stop at the newly revitalized Cameron Hall. Staff, students, and the community are invited to participate throughout November. MCC will highlight its rich history with stories, photos, and fun trivia across social media, celebrating the people and milestones that have shaped the College’s legacy. Additional anniversary activities will be woven into campus traditions, including Welcome Week, Highlander Games, Holiday Open House, and the Fall and Spring Commencements.
