Sociology Department

Welcome to the Sociology Department at McLennan Community College.

We invite you to come join the experience of discovery in the field of Sociology.

What sociology is—and what it is not

Sociology is the study of social life

Sociologists examine how people interact in families, schools, workplaces, communities, organizations, and societies.

Sociology is evidence-based

The field uses research methods, data, interviews, observation, and theory to understand social patterns and social problems.

Sociology is not just common sense

Sociology often challenges assumptions by asking students to compare personal experiences with broader social evidence.

Sociology is not the same as psychology

Psychology often focuses on individuals. Sociology focuses on social relationships, groups, institutions, inequality, and culture.
