FAQ
C.A.R.E. Frequently Asked Questions
Why was I contacted by C.A.R.E.?
Being contacted by C.A.R.E. does not mean you are in trouble or in violation of any policy. C.A.R.E. reaches out to offer support, consult, or follow up on a concern related to a student’s well‑being. Our role is to provide guidance, share resources, and support student success—not to discipline or punish.
What should be included in a C.A.R.E. referral?
A referral should include the student’s name, contact information, and a brief description of the concerning behavior or situation. Specific observations (what was seen or heard) are more helpful than interpretations or assumptions. You do not need to have all the answers—just share what prompted your concern.
Once a referral is submitted, the C.A.R.E. Team reviews the information and determines appropriate next steps, which may include outreach to the student, consultation with campus partners, and connection to supportive resources. The process is focused on early intervention, care, and student success.

How do I know when to refer to C.A.R.E. versus Conduct?
When in doubt, refer to C.A.R.E. Concerns involving emotional distress or any reference to harm to self or harm to others should be sent to the C.A.R.E. Team first—even if the concern seems minor or you are unsure.
Student Conduct generally comes first only when a formal threat assessment identifies an immediate safety risk to the campus community. In those cases, conduct processes may occur before C.A.R.E. engagement. If a student returns to campus, C.A.R.E. then provides continued support and resources.
Will I violate a student’s privacy rights by contacting C.A.R.E.?
No. Referring a concern to C.A.R.E. does not violate privacy laws. C.A.R.E. operates within FERPA and institutional guidelines, and information is shared only with those who have a legitimate educational interest.
Can C.A.R.E. provide trainings?
Yes. The C.A.R.E. Team offers trainings and presentations for faculty, staff, and student groups on topics including recognizing students in distress, trauma‑informed response, suicide prevention, responding to disclosures, and campus support resources. These presentations do not qualify for Professional Development credit.
We require at least a two week advance notice for most presentations. If your request falls outside of that timeline, availability cannot be guaranteed. For questions, please call 254‑299‑8208.
How do I know if a concerning behavior is a C.A.R.E. Team issue?
If something feels concerning, unusual, or worrisome—even if you are unsure—it is appropriate to submit a C.A.R.E. referral. To learn more about behaviors that may warrant a C.A.R.E. referral, please visit our Behaviors to Look For page.
Who is eligible for C.A.R.E.?
Any currently enrolled student (credit, continuing education, or dual credit) is eligible for C.A.R.E. support.
Are C.A.R.E. meetings confidential?
Meetings are private and handled with care. Information is shared only on a need‑to‑know basis to support student safety and success.
Where is C.A.R.E. located?
C.A.R.E. is located in the Math and Wellness Building, Room 226D. Virtual appointments are also available.
