Examples of Instructional Methods

Think you have a good understanding of the Instructional Methods?  View the scenarios/examples below and try to decide whether the scenario represents a Face-to-Face (Web Enhanced), Blended, Blendsync, Online, or Hyflex Course.

• An instructor meets with their class three hours a week face-to-face in the classroom. Online they have handouts, PowerPoints and grades posted that the students can access. (This is a three credit course that meets three hours a week.)

  Answer: Face-to-Face (Web-Enhanced)

  This is a Web-Enhanced (Face-to-Face) course. The class is meeting three hours a week and the only thing online is supplemental information to enhance the face-to-face course. Even though the materials are online, there is not any direct instruction being presented online. Also online instruction does not add up to 15% of the course.

• An instructor's class is fully online however they are requiring the students to take a proctored exam for the midterm and the final.

  Answer: Online

  This class is a fully online course. An online course can meet for proctored exams or an occasional meeting, but mandatory meetings/proctored exams must constitute less than 15% of the course. Most online instructors choose to make these meeting times or exam times as flexible as possible, since most students take online course due to time and life constraints.

• An instructor has half of the class meet on Monday and the other half of the class meet on Wednesday face-to-face in a classroom. The rest of the week the class should watch the recorded Zoom video of the class they did not see face-to-face in the classroom and complete other assignments online.

  Answer: Blended

  This is a Blended class. All students meet face-to-face at least once a week and then the rest of the material is online. The Zoom sessions are recorded so it allows the students not in class that day to watch the recording and complete all work online as their schedule allows.

• The instructor has class on Monday and Wednesdays from 8:00-9:20. The students can come to this class or watch via Zoom. Also if the student is sick or has work they can also just take the class online.

  Answer: Hyflex

  This class is a Hyflex class. The students can come to class on Monday and Wednesdays from 8:00 - 9:20, or they can watch the class live via Zoom at that time, or they can choose to complete all materials and assignments online. This course allows complete flexibility for the student to decide how and when they want to take the class.
