Adult Education & Literacy
The Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) program is funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). AEL provides opportunities for students to acquire the skills needed to enter the workforce, earn a high school equivalency, enter college, and begin training for a career.
Courses are available online and in person. Courses are held in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
Current course offerings include:
- General Education Development (GED)
- The GED is a recognized high school equivalency exam. It consists of four parts.
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Science
- Social Studies
- The GED is a recognized high school equivalency exam. It consists of four parts.
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Learn English at each level of language proficiency.
- English for Professionals
- Learn professional English (for existing professionals)
- Citizenship
- Prepare to take the United States Naturalization Test
- TOEFL Test Preparation
- Prepare to take the TOEFL assessment for entry into higher education
- Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
- Provide or assist with basic care or support under the direction of onsite licensed nursing staff. Perform duties such as monitoring health status, feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, or ambulating patients in a health or nursing facility.
- Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

Administer medications to residents in nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, correctional institutions, and assisted living facilities.

- Patient Care Technician (PCT)
- Works under the supervision of a nurse, doctor, or other health professional to administer basic care to patients. This position involves interacting with patients face-to-face and aiding with daily tasks.
- Google Project Management: Professional Certificate (Coming soon!)
- Basic Computer Skills
- Instruction in computer hardware and software, navigating Windows, Internet browsing, email communication, keyboarding skills, and online safety and security.
- Microsoft Office Suites (MOS) Specialist
- Instruction in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Upon completion, students receive a Microsoft Office Suites (MOS) Specialist certificate.
- Paraprofessional Certificate
- Assist a preschool, elementary, middle, or secondary school teacher with instructional duties. Serve in a position for which a teacher has primary responsibility for the design and implementation of educational programs and services.
- Certified Logistics Technician (CLT)
- Work in front-line material handling in shipping and receiving operations.
- Certified Production Technician (CPT)
- Work in machine operation in manufacturing production.
- Workforce Readiness
- Become prepared to successfully enter the workforce.
- College Readiness
- Become prepared to enter higher education.
Eligibility
Courses are FREE to students that meet the requirements of the program.
The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program supports opportunities for individuals who are at least 16 years old, lack a high school credential or function below the high school level, or are unable to speak, read or write English, and are seeking career training, high school equivalency preparation or college. TWC partners with local AEL providers, Workforce Solutions offices, and nonprofit agencies to promote an increased opportunity for adult learners to transition to postsecondary education, training or employment.
