Alternative Teacher Certification

Welcome to McLennan Community College’s Alternative Teacher Certification Program. We prepare and certify new teachers in the Waco-Temple-Killeen area. Upon successful completion of MCC’s program and state mandated certification exams, educator candidates will be certified to teach in Texas schools. It is our sincere wish that your experience in our program will be rewarding and that success will follow you in your new career.

McLennan Community College’s Alternative Teacher Certification program is accredited by the Texas State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC).

Mission Statement

The mission of the Alternative Teacher Certification Program is to provide the development of quality teachers through an excellent alternative certification program in a community of learners that meets the needs of local school districts. The Alternative Teacher Certification Program endorses the mission and core values set forth by McLennan Community College.

The program trains individuals with a bachelor’s degree who desire to enter the teaching profession. We offer 29 content areas including Trade and Industrial Education. Students who enroll must successfully complete:

   - A Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 course

   - A content specialization course; and

   - An internship which consists of two semesters, or one semester of
     clinical teaching (student teaching).

Educator candidates will be standard certified to teach in Texas schools upon successful completion of the program and state mandated certification exams. The internship and program instruction are highly supervised.

For students in this program who may have a criminal background, please be advised that the background could keep you from being licensed by the State of Texas. If you have a question concerning your background and licensure, please contact the program director or assistant director. You also have the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter from the Texas Education Agency. Please see TAC 249.16 to find current SBEC Rules.
