Admission Requirements

Applications for the Alternative Teacher Certification Program are due by the following dates. 

Fall Cohort: August 8 | Spring Cohort: December 5 | Summer Cohort: May 20 

Admission to the program will be based on the following criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university. Potential graduates in their last semester of study may submit an application.
  • 2.75 GPA minimum overall or on last 60 hours of college coursework.  Passing scores on the Pre Admission Content Test may allow admission to program if your GPA does not meet this requirement.
  • Three (3) confidential professional references
  • Official interview with Program Director and Assistant Program Director
  • For a program candidate who will be seeking an initial certificate, a minimum of 12 semester credit hours is required in the subject-specific content area for the certification sought. For secondary math or science certification, individuals must have a minimum of 15 semester credit hours. However, if an individual does not have the required hours, he/she may qualify for admission in that content area by passing the Pre Admission Content Test prior to applying for admission.

Please bring a copy of your final college transcript.

All foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated. Foreign Credential Services of America 1910 Justin Lane Austin, Texas 78757-2411 Phone 512-459-8428 info@fcsa.biz or any of the other services listed on the TEA foreign evaluation services website can be used for transcript evaluation purposes.  The state requires that individuals with foreign transcripts take a TOEFL and score at least 24 speaking, 22 listening, 22 reading, and 21 writing prior to program admission.

The following materials must be submitted before an official interview can be conducted:

  • Completed application
  • Official transcript (Please have transcript mailed to ATTN: Alternative Teacher Certification, 1400 College Dr. CSC E 115 Waco, Texas 76708), or transcript can be sent more quickly by emailing it to ATC@mclennan.edu
  • Documentation of bachelor degree conferred (found on transcript) and PACT scores if applicable.
  • Three professional references (friend and family cannot be used). The reference forms can be faxed to 254-299-6227, mailed to Alternative Teacher Certification, McLennan Community College 1400 College Drive Waco, TX 76708 or emailed to ATC@mclennan.edu.
