Google Workspace Change (Student Email)
What is changing?
Google has changed storage limits for Google Workspace for Education from unlimited to 100-terabytes. McLennan Community College exceeds this limitation by 3.5 times and must reduce items stored in Google Workspace or critical services like Student Email will cease to function.
As a result, ISS staff are instituting a 15-gigabyte limit on all Google Workspace for Education accounts. This means that faculty, staff and students no longer have unlimited space and may need to reduce storage in Google Workspace. This affects student email accounts, student Google drive accounts, and Faculty or Staff storage in Google.
Accounts who continue to exceed the limit on the deadline will be locked and that account’s data will be deleted. Data deleted in this activity cannot be restored.
This activity does not affect resources for Faculty and Staff like email, Microsoft One Drive, SharePoint, and departmental file storage for Faculty and Staff.
A targeted email is being sent to account owners who currently exceed this limit.
When is it changing?
- Effective immediately: There is now a 15-gigabyte limit.
- 6/13/2023: Accounts exceeding the limit will be locked and purged. Data deleted in this activity cannot be restored.
What do I need to do?
If you do not use Google Workspace for Education, you do not need to do anything. If you do not know if you use Google Workspace for Education, please follow these steps.
- Please review your current storage usage by logging into this website. https://drive.Google.com/drive/quota
- You may need to switch accounts to your college account. You can tell if you are using the college account by seeing the logo in the upper right corner.
- If your usage currently exceeds 15-gigabytes, move your data. You can do this by moving your data into a department file share, or your local desktop. Once your data is moved, you can delete the data.
