Certified Nurse Aide
Class Description
This 100-hour class teaches students the skills and information needed to become a state-certified nurse aide. Students will learn how to work in health care facilities and help nurses care for patients.
This class covers key health care topics, including:
- Health care systems and teams
- Legal and ethical issues
- Professionalism and communication
- Growth and development
- Anatomy and physiology
- Safety and infection control
- First aid and emergency care
- Rehabilitation and restorative care
- Common health problems and special care needs
Nurse aides perform basic nursing tasks under the supervision of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN). They also help patients with personal hygiene, safety, nutrition, exercise, and other daily needs.
Nurse aides work in many settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, clinics, hospices, and doctors' offices.
About the Texas Nurse Aide Registry and Training Course
This course is required by the federal government for anyone who wants to work as a nurse aide in a long-term care facility. After completing the training, students take both the skills and written parts of the state exam. Tuition covers the state exam fee.
Admission Requirements and/or Prerequisites
- Immunizations
- Texas state background check
- Drug screen
NOTE 1: Before starting any health care class in the Health and Human Services Continuing Education department, students must show proof of immunizations for Hepatitis B, varicella, measles, mumps, rubella, and diphtheria/tetanus. Students must also provide proof of a tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray. In addition, students must complete a drug screen and criminal background check. Prior to entering any health care class in the Health and Human Services Continuing Education department, all health care students will be required to show proof of immunization against Hepatitis B, varicella, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria/tetanus, and proof of tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray. In addition to the immunization requirements, the student must provide results of a drug screen and a criminal background check.
NOTE 2: Pregnant students must provide written permission from their doctor stating they may take part in the class and can lift at least 25 pounds.
