Vet Tech Admission Requirements

General Admissions Requirements

The program accepts up to 30 students each year. Admission is limited and competitive. You must meet the admission requirements for McLennan Community College and the Veterinary Technology program.  The program uses a point system to choose applicants.

Admission Requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Be 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED.
  • Complete these required courses with a grade of C or better by the application deadline:
    • Biology 1406 or Biology 1408
    • English 1301 (Composition I)
    • Math 1314 (College Algebra) or Math 1332 (Contemporary Mathematics)
    • Psychology 2301 or Sociology 1301
  • Complete at least 50 hours of work, volunteer, or observation experience at an approved animal care facility. You must work under the supervision of a DVM or LVT, such as in a private veterinary practice or clinic.
    • You may complete the hours at one or more locations.
    • If you use more than one location, you must complete a separate form for each site.
    • Submit all required forms with your application.
    • You can find the form under "Documentation of Required Hours" on the right side of this webpage.
  • Submit transcripts from every college where you earned credit to both the Veterinary Technology Program Director and McLennan Admissions. McLennan Admissions requires official transcripts.
  • Submit a completed application with all required documents to the Veterinary Technology Program Director by the application deadline. Emailed applications are not accepted.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for Fall 2026 admission is June 15, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.

How Students are Selected

The Health Professions Admissions Committee reviews all completed applications using the program's admission criteria.

  • Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
  • Students with the highest point totals based on the published selection criteria will be admitted.
  • Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • This is not an open enrollment program.

Program Policies

The Veterinary Technology program has policies about program requirements and student responsibilities.

Students accepted into the program will receive a copy of these policies when they begin the program. Each student is responsible for following them.

Application Timeline

The program accepts applications from January 1 through June 15 each year for classes that begin the following Fall semester.

Applicants will receive the Selection Committee's decision by July 15.

New Student Orientation

Students accepted into the program must attend a required new-student orientation before the first day of class. The program will send the orientation date and time to accepted students.

Items Needed Before the First Day of Class

All accepted students must have the following items by the first day of class:

  1. Stethoscope
  2. Watch with a second hand
  3. One (1) MCC Veterinary Technology Scrub uniform (information regarding this will be provided at orientation)
  4. Closed-toed shoes with non-slip bottoms (such as tennis shoes)
